Interview – Iain Dunn – IT Support Analyst

Welcome to interview number 11 in this series, where we get to know our newer Quorumites a little better and discuss what life has been like in their first six months in-role.

Today we’re chatting with Iain Dunn, an IT Support Analyst in our Managed Service team. You can also find out more about Iain’s career change from the RAF to civilian life in this article that we released in celebration of Scottish Careers Week.

If you missed the last interview with Operations Executive, Amy Hunter-Law, you can find that here.

Tell us a bit about your role?

I’m an IT Support Analyst in the Managed Services team. I was introduced to Quorum by a recruiter who had worked with Jackie Begbie (Quorum’s Recruitment Manager). I had a couple of rounds of interviews and started from there.

The Managed Services Team provides and manages IT services for multiple clients. I’ve worked with clients across a range of sectors including law firms, construction, broadband services and finance. We provide end users with support, look for ways to improve our user’s experience and provide solutions on how those companies could use technology to help develop them as a whole.

What have you been up to in your first six months?

Quite a lot! I came to Quorum after leaving the military, so it has been quite a big shift. In the military all of the equipment was on-prem, and we didn’t use technologies such as Azure, InTune, SCCM etc.

I’ve had to start learning the new Microsoft stack, mainly focusing on and adjusting to the newer cloud-based services along with the products that they offer. We also deal with some niche technologies that are specific to the sectors we work with, so it’s been a big learning curve.

Tell us about any notable moments so far?

Probably dislocating my knee at the company BBQ while wearing a sumo suit! Everyone certainly knew me after that.

What is your biggest achievement in Quorum?

Passing probation. I won’t lie, I was a little nervous about moving from military to civilian life and how I’d cope and adapt to that. I’ve enjoyed the transition and it been a lot less stressful than I thought it would be. I’m enjoying working with the new technology and pushing myself to develop my skills further.

I’ve also started looking at gaining certifications, there’s a lot to take in, but I’ve got my first exam coming up soon.

What advice would you give to new Quorumites?

Basically, just enjoy it, is probably the best way to say it. Keep your ears open and don’t be afraid to ask for advice from your peers. There are a lot of knowledgeable people and everyone’s approachable, so just speak up if you have questions or need any help with an issue. There’s always someone that is willing to help you either find a solution or knows someone that will know the answer.

I’d like to advise anyone leaving the military and thinking of a career in IT or cloud technologies to consider Quorum. It’s been a good transition and Quorum could not have done more to help me during this period.
