PIONEERS OF CLOUD TECHNOLOGIES
Many organisations have already taken advantage of public cloud services such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. The cloud has disrupted the IT market and all market sectors and IT organisations are still adapting to the change. Cloud adoption can take many shapes depending on the organisation and business drivers.
The cloud offers three models for adoption:
- Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offers an extension (hybrid model), or even a complete replacement, of your existing data centre where organisations can take advantage of the price, speed and flexibility the cloud offers. It is relatively straightforward to migrate on-premise virtual machines onto cloud IaaS services and many companies look at this as the first step of their cloud journey.
- Platform as a Service (PaaS) provides core services such as web servers and databases, allowing business to focus on the applications and data, whilst the cloud provider deals with all the underlying infrastructure. PaaS services are generally more secure, scalable and cost effective than their IaaS equivalents, but also require additional effort to migrate from existing on-premise services.
- Software as a Service (SaaS) offerings like Microsoft Office 365 provide a completely managed application which users can consume through the cloud, where the cloud provider looks after every aspect of IT delivery.
