Microsoft visualise a ‘virtual’ boom

In a bid to increase the uptake of virtualisation software, Microsoft has recently relaxed their licensing rules.

Virtualisation is designed to consolidate a company’s existing servers into one larger server, saving money on power costs and reducing work load for technical staff.  For larger companies the process should offer a fairly quick return on investment, yet uptake so far has been slower than some people think.

Worrying trend in laptop thefts

Laptop thefts are on the increase.  Between 2006 and 2007, thefts across the UK increased by an average of 6%; the Lothian & Borders region, however, showed a huge increase of 31.5%.  While most laptops are stolen by opportunist thieves keen on making a ‘quick buck’, research shows that 10-15% of thefts are targeted at business people with presumably valuable information.  The value of the contents of your laptop is potentially far greater than the hardware itself.
